Seek Counsel, Embrace Change

To be an excellent leader, I think you must be passionate about what you are doing, be knowledgeable, act with fairness and respect, be willing to listen to others’ counsel and make changes as necessary.

My professional life started as a plastic surgeon in a multi-specialty clinic but I have also been a small business owner since 2001. Business skills are not part of medical school curriculum so when I started Garrison Plastic Surgery, I relied on counsel from many different people and organizations. This reinforces the idea that leaders need to recognize their own limitations. It really does take a village. My office staff members each bring unique and necessary skill sets that help make our business thrive. I like the idea that it is a team effort.

It is important to set an example for your staff and colleagues. Your attitude and work ethic helps set the tone for the environment in which you are working. I will never ask my employees to do something I am not willing to do. I try to be generous, fair, kind, and try to teach when the opportunity arises. I try to always listen to my staff. Compassion for others is what drives me to do the best job that I can do.

My day always starts with prayer for my family, staff, patients, and myself. The older I get, the more I recognize the importance of my faith.
