Knowledge Speaks, Wisdom Listens

It is not surprising to me that women lead. Women lead at home, in their communities, within non-profits and businesses. According to one survey, 74.9% of women identify themselves as the primary shoppers for their households. Another survey indicates that women make 70% of all travel decisions for their families.
The most staggering statistic on the power of women touts that women make up 90% of household healthcare decisions but that 65% of them feel misunderstood by their healthcare providers. As an attorney focusing on representing patients in times of negligent care, that statistic speaks volumes. I advise clients to speak up, ask questions and be heard.

My advice to young lawyers is similar: speak up, be engaged and confirm you are being heard. Communication is key when practicing law. At the same time, folks should not speak for the sake of speaking. The late great Jimi Hendrix once said, “Knowledge speaks but wisdom listens.”

At Hall Ansley, we have made a point as attorneys to listen to and assist our clients in making sound decisions for their future. As a leader of the firm I find it is crucial to listen to all ideas and follow through with action. In an environment where only 19% of the equity partners in a law firm are women, I value the opportunity to practice with my male partners where I have participated as a leader of this firm for over 25 years. I encourage other female attorneys to make such a commitment. It is well worth it!
