First, Learn How to Follow
I think in order to lead, you first have to learn how to follow. I think we are born with a certain amount of talents. As you mature you develop those talents. You become a leader or a follower. In college, as an art major, I learned to think outside the box, to pay attention to details, to analyze and see why things look like they do, to be very observant. The teacher in me was always helping people and solving issues. Eventually I found real estate, which is a problem solving profession where attention to detail is critical. Putting your client first is very important. My clients know I really care about making them happy.
As my business grew, I needed to add people of like mind to keep giving the kind of service I believe my customers deserve. Eventually, if you are on the right track, you become the leader. You make decisions calmly with consideration of the other person’s needs and by being creative. I relish a challenge. I see each new situation as a puzzle I can't wait to solve.
I believe it is important to be involved in your community. One of the ways I give back is to make a charitable donation in my customer's name to a teacher or organization of their choice with each transaction. I have also endowed a scholarship to the Art Department at Missouri State University, my alma mater.
