Empower, Encourage, Enjoy

Being a leader is an amazing opportunity to impact the lives of others. Anyone can be given a title of manager. Leadership is earned. It involves creating a culture of trust and respect where people want to work together toward a clearly communicated common goal.

One of the most important leadership lessons I learned was to get the right people in the right seats on the bus. Give them the support and resources they need to do their jobs and then get out of their way. Realize that there are many paths to the same destination. Allow your employees to find their own path. Empower people to make decisions.

Encourage creativity. It has been a privilege to work for bosses over the years that let me find my own way to the intended destination within broad parameters. Many times, the lessons learned along the way were filled with exciting opportunities both personally and for the organization.

Recognize that innovation keeps us from becoming stagnant and obsolete. Open the door to innovation by creating a culture where mistakes are viewed as a learning experience, rather than failure. Encourage employees to challenge the status quo. Build trust in your organization. Get to know your employees personally. Value them and celebrate their successes. It is easy to get busy and forget to take the time to listen. Be present and enjoy the journey.
