Changing the System From Within
I think many of today's leadership articles, books, and training focus on the “what to do” if you want to be a great leader. However, if I am being honest, what haunts me the most is the “what not to do” and the day-to-day mistakes that add up and create roadblocks in a vision. I have been surrounded by so many that have cheered me on, built me up, and led by example. However, I must admit, I have been equally influenced by the “what not to do” experiences as well.
My professional aha moment came around the time I had my third child and I was told in a performance review I needed to choose between being a mom or an attorney. I think this is a common challenge female leaders face. I thrive on challenges, so quitting was not an option. Instead, I resolved to focus on changing it through non-traditional and interactive leadership. In my opinion, leaders who don't drive change put their companies in grave danger.
People perform better when they are valued, energized and don’t feel as if they have to choose between their job and real life. I think in summary that’s my leadership style. One of my favorite quotes is “Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg. If that’s my legacy, I am okay with that.
