Childhood Lessons Follow into Career

My father was and still is a major influence in my professional career. From an early age, there were a few principles instilled in me. Be patient. Not everything happens on your schedule and being patient and waiting for just the right time is key.  In the same respect, always have more than one plan. Most plans don’t follow exactly as you like. Be ready to think on your feet and be adaptable. If mistakes are made, make them a teaching moment. Lastly, if your business isn’t your own, run it like it is. Take pride and ownership in the company you work for and make decisions as if it were yours.

In a leadership position, a best practice is to surround yourself with experts. Know your employees’ skills, place them in the right position, and empower them. By doing that, there is an opportunity for you to learn from your employees who are the subject matter experts. As a successful leader you should never stop learning.

What I consider one of my greatest accomplishments as a leader has been seeing my employees grow and become amazing leaders themselves. Much like my responsibility as a parent to raise responsible and self-supporting members of society, it is my responsibility to empower and train my employees to become successful leaders. I take great pride in my role in creating the next generation of leaders.
