Developing a Legacy of Love and Integrity
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks, we know that by placing positive mentors in the lives of the children, we can significantly impact their lives. I have been fortunate to have inspirational people stand alongside me to ensure I can reach my potential, including my current boss, CEO Ashley French. She and others have guided me with lessons in leadership and my education continues as I figure out the kind of leader I want to be.
As editor for MSU’s student-run paper, I had unreasonable expectations of reporters. Instead of reprimanding me, our faculty advisor Jack Dimond showed me empathy and restraint. He taught me that fear doesn’t equal respect. Leading with love and compassion will earn you trust and loyalty.
When I worked for former Greene County Commissioner Roseann Bentley, I was in awe of her accomplishments. Roseann’s fight for our seat at the table opened up many leadership opportunities for women. Despite her superior achievements, she always sought my perspective on county decisions. Roseann gifted me my SBJ 40 Under 40 plaque with pride in her eyes. It was one of the best moments of my career, and her leadership continues to remind me that we can also gauge our own success when we invest in others.
I hope that I am remembered for having led with integrity, for inspiring others to use their potential to dream and do more, and for giving voice to those who need a seat at the table.
