Forging a New Path Through Experience

Being a woman in a largely male-dominated field hasn’t been easy. In fact, I would say that it’s been a difficult journey that has taught me a great deal about business, people, and myself.

Currently there are more women in marketing, but this wasn’t the case just five years ago. Go back a few more years and the only real room for women was in reception, not sales.

I knew there had to be a better way of doing things, from leadership down. I didn’t like the typical leadership style of dictating, not listening, and ignoring great ideas due to politics. Most of all, I didn’t want to be limited by the outdated industry mindset.

I learned that leadership is a two-way street, with everybody capable of teaching each other. This is key because success doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When I launched my agency, I did things differently.

Along the way I had great mentors, like Jim Meikle and Rich Nichols. They taught me about handling stress, managing growth, and balancing life. Experience also taught me plenty of lessons, like how to walk away from difficult clients. Sometimes, the stress negates any dollar amount you receive from a troublesome situation. It’s also shown me how important it is to love what you do. Your career is where you spend most of your time, so it’s important to do something you don’t need a vacation from!
