Hurts Donut consolidates Springfield stores

Hurts Donut Co. has consolidated its Queen City stores, with the focus now centered on its central Springfield shop.

Co-owner Tim Clegg said the company's store at 1111 E. Republic Road, Ste. 164, relocated its operations to 1231 E. Sunshine St., Ste. 100, on Dec. 24. All of the south-side shop's staff have moved to the Sunshine store, he said.

"We aim to enhance our focus on a single, high-performing store," Clegg said via email.

The Hurts Donut at Sunshine and National Avenue is the company's flagship store, and its launch in late 2022 meant the consolidation of the company's downtown location into it, as well, according to past reporting.

The latest move impacting the Republic Road location is similar, he said.

"As the flagship corporate location, we aspire for it to embody the pinnacle of our standards, setting the precedent for new stores nationwide," Clegg said of the Sunshine store. "In the strategic move to merge the downtown location with the Republic Road location at 1231 E. Sunshine, investments were made in advanced production equipment."

Clegg pointed to the Sunshine location's "fourfold increase in doughnut production capacity compared to the combined output of the previous stores." He added the Sunshine store has a drive-thru, espresso bar, ice cream selections and additional doughnut cases.

The Republic Road store, located near the intersection with National in the Gallery Eleven shopping center, opened in 2015, according to Springfield Business Journal archives. The downtown store launched in 2013 and relocated less than a block down the street in 2015.

The Sunshine store, located in Sagamore Hill Development's retail and office center, opened in December 2022, at which time the downtown store’s operations ceased.

In 2024, Hurts Donut has a goal of opening a minimum of four new locations outside of Springfield, starting with a store in Cincinnati that debuted last week, Clegg said. The company’s website lists roughly 20 locations.
