Cold and wet weather during this year’s potato harvest may result in a shortage of French fries in the United States.
Overall potato production is slated to drop roughly 6% from 2018, marking the worst year since 2010. In Idado, which produces a third of U.S. potatoes, some 308,000 acres were harvested this year, a drop of 7,000 acres from 2018. Canadian crops also were hit hard by the unusual weather.
Processors across North America are reportedly seeking additional sources to keep up with increased demand for fries.
