Tamales, ice cream on the move downtown

Posted online

Restaurants serving tamales and ice cream are on the move downtown.

El Tamale Drip, which opened last year inside Sweet Boy’s Neighborhood Bar, is relocating to the Outland complex just down the street on South Avenue, according to a Facebook post.

The tamale restaurant, owned by Miguel Guzman and Phillip Ulesich, is taking over the space currently occupied by Sweet EMOtion, an ice cream shop in front of the Outland's Odyssey Lounge that is a play on the emo and pop punk musical genres. The oat milk ice cream shop, which opened in 2020, is relocating around the corner to a spot adjacent to Black Sheep Burgers and Shakes, according to social media posts.

The restaurant owners could not be reached for comment by deadline.

El Tamale Drip is exiting a space in the back of Sweet Boy's, a bar that operates at 310 South Ave. The Sandwich Scene on McDaniel, formerly Secret Sandwich Shop LLC, previously operated in the Sweet Boy's space before relocating last year to 208 W. McDaniel St.

The Facebook post indicated an opening date for El Tamale Drip's new storefront would be announced at a later time. The venture, which serves a variety of tamales and sauces, has closed temporarily in preparation for the move.
