State treasurer returns $1M in unclaimed property

Posted online
Since mid-February, Missouri Treasurer Clint Zweifel's office returned more than $1 million in unclaimed property to eight account owners, including an unnamed individual in Springfield.

The Springfieldian - who was not named due to privacy reasons - received more than $100,000 from a certificate of deposit, according to a May 3 news release from Zweifel's office.

Other funding retrieved:
  • A Clayton business received more than $150,000 in securities.
  • A Kansas City individual received more than $125,000 in securities.
  • A Leasburg individual received more than $110,000 from a checking account.
  • A Potosi business received more than $120,000 in securities.
  • A St. Ann individual received more than $100,000 from a certificate of deposit.
  • An Overland Park, Kan., individual received more than $180,000 in bond coupons, dividends and securities.
  • A U.S. business that has its headquarters in New Jersey received more than $375,000 in securities, unredeemed gift certificates and accounts payable.
“All of us would like $100,000 or $1 million, and it is my job to get this money out the door fast and in to the hands of individuals and business owners. These are amounts that make a substantial difference,” Zweifel said in the release. “Bureaucracy and red tape can get in the way, but not with unclaimed property."

Unclaimed property can be claimed online at the state treasurer's Web site.
