The Missouri Department of Labor & Industrial Relations recently released its latest unemployment figures.

Joplin's metropolitan statistical area reported an unemployment rate of 4.9 percent in August.

That's up from the 4 percent unemployment rate reported in July and also an increase compared to August 1997, when the Joplin area rate was 4.5 percent.

The Joplin metropolitan statistical area is comprised of Grundy, Jasper, Harrison, Newton and Henry counties.

Of those counties, Newton County had the highest unemployment rate at 6.1 percent.

Harrison County reported 2 percent unemployment, the lowest in the Joplin metropolitain area.
