The first smartwatch on the market getting major buzz disappoints in an ABC News review of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear.
Tech reviewer Joanna Stern says Samsung’s smartwatch, dubbed “the next big thing” and reminiscent of the old-school calculator watches, is functional but not comfortable.
“The Gear looks just like the high-tech watch you'd expect Dick Tracy or James Bond to wear,” Stern writes. “But it's the heft that's underneath it that makes it very chunky and uncomfortable to wear.”
The $300 watch makes phone calls, sends text messages, downloads emails and runs apps, but it requires Samsung’s newest Note 3 to work.
Google, Microsoft and Apple (trademark iWatch, of course) are all rumored to be developing the high-tech bracelets. One competitor that beat Samsung to market is little-known Pebble, which launched its smartwatch concept on Kickstarter in 2012 and hit Best Buy shelves this summer. Sony has developed two versions of its smartwatch.
