Open for Business: The Sweet Deal

Posted online

The Sweet Deal
A baked goods vendor at Farmers Market of the Ozarks expanded to a brick-and-mortar operation with the Aug. 5 opening of The Sweet Deal LLC. Owner Laura Deal said she used her own name for inspiration when titling her bakery, located at 107 W. Aldersgate Drive, Ste. 10, in Nixa. The Sweet Deal’s menu is all gluten-free and features cinnamon rolls, oatmeal cream pies, cakes, pretzel buns, breads, brownies and macarons. Deal said prices for most baked goods range $3-$7. She said startup costs were $19,000, noting she purchased new commercial ovens and equipment and employs three. Deal declined to disclose the rate of the three-year lease for 950 square feet she signed with landlord Mike Evans. Deal began selling baked goods last year at the farmers market and remains a vendor most weekends. Health issues led her to start a gluten-free lifestyle a few years ago, and Deal said that fueled her desire to begin a bakery.

Old Missouri Bank
The first lending center for Old Missouri Bank opened July 18 at 3050 S. Delaware Ave. The 6,300-square-foot facility in Financial Plaza Center employs 15, said Ryan Bowling, vice president and director of marketing. He declined to disclose lease terms with building owner Morris Loan and Investment Co., which Bowling said updated flooring and paint in the space while OMB completed other repairs and improvements at an undisclosed cost. According to bank officials, although the center does not take deposits, it provides much-needed workspaces for employees with the bank’s Treasury services, information technology, business banking and commercial lending departments. In addition to the center, OMB also earlier this year opened its third branch in Springfield at 2423 W. Republic Road. It operates eight branches systemwide, including ones in Ash Grove, Buffalo, Carthage, Mount Vernon and Walnut Grove.

London Calling Pasty Co.
Nearly a decade after debuting, London Calling Pasty Co. added a new food truck Oct. 8 that serves the British staple of fish and chips. Neil Gomme, who owns the 2013-founded company with sister-in-law Carrie Mitchell, declined to disclose the purchase price for the truck. London Calling Fish & Chips travels in Springfield and within an hour’s drive around it in communities such as Carthage, Lebanon, Marshfield and Monett, Gomme said. Fish and chips, priced at $13, is the only food option, though he said other British-based items are being considered. London Calling’s longtime food truck, which sells pasties, shepherd’s pies, sausage rolls and traditional British desserts, remains in operation, as does its Battlefield Mall restaurant and retail kiosk at Price Cutter on South National Avenue. Gomme said the mall spot was a factor that went into launching the new food truck. Fish and chips were previously sold only at the mall, he said, and that is the top-selling item there.
