JQH Texas hotel and convention center hits funding block

Posted online
John Q. Hammons has halted construction of a proposed Denton, Texas, hotel and convention center due to financing issues, according to Pegasus News.

Hammons must come up with $50 million for the hotel before the project can continue, according to the article.

The project is set to be built near the University of North Texas, on UNT-owned land, and is to be built along with the construction of a UNT football stadium, the article said.

Mayor Mark Burroughs told Pegasus that the city of Denton has set aside funds for the convention center, but Hammons is supposed to provide funding for the hotel.

The proposed plan has been in the works for four years, according to the article.

JQH representatives could not be reached for comment.

The developer has had funding problems before. Earlier this year, Hammons announced he would not be building a hotel next to the Expo Center, citing the rough state of the economy.
