Anthony Levandowski, the former leader of Uber's self-driving technology unit, filed for bankruptcy.
The filing came shortly after a court confirmed he must pay $179 million to Google over his split from the company.
The court ruled Levandowski, who had been a key engineer in Google's self-driving project, engaged in unfair competition by exiting and starting his own rival company. That company then was purchased by Uber.
