On Monday, Drury volunteers will begin work on the house on Drury Lane in Habitat’s Legacy Trails subdivision, in preparation for 280 students who will prefabricate the house’s walls as part of a service-learning project. An official construction kickoff ceremony will be Aug. 25.
Planning for the project began in spring 2005. Drury’s Habitat chapter helped raise funding – $50,000 has been pledged, in addition to in-kind building material donations – and Drury architecture students developed the house plan and materials list.
The house will be built using sustainable building materials and passive systems to be energy efficient, according to a news release. Drury students will pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, with help from Bates & Associates architects and funding from Community Foundation of the Ozarks.
Donors to the project include National Avenue Christian Church, which gave $25,000; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, which gave $10,000; and national organization Bike and Build Inc., which gave $10,000.
Amy Pinegar, her three children and one grandchild will move into the house when it is complete.
