The Discovery Center of Springfield Inc. has been approved for $225,901 in state tax credits from the Missouri Department of Economic Development.
The credits are being provided through DED's Neighborhood Assistance Program, which typically aids nonprofits.
According to a news release, the Discovery Center will use the funding for its Science Works on the Road initiative, which provides five- to eight-week science enhancement programs in rural school districts in a 10-county area. The initiative targets schools classified as Title 1, with a high number of low-income students and high percentage of students performing poorly in science and math.
Through NAP, companies can donate money, materials, supplies, equipment, technical assistant and professional services, labor, real estate, or stocks and bonds.
Credits can equal up to 50 percent of the value of the contribution or up to 70 percent for projects in most rural areas. NAP tax credits can be applied to income, corporate franchise, bank, insurance and express companies taxes, according to DED's
Web site.
