California to release 3,500 inmates early

California is releasing 3,500 inmates early in an effort to reduce crowding as the coronavirus spreads in the state's prisons.

The inmates already were slated for release over the next 60 days. They are serving time for nonviolent crimes.

COVID-19 cases have been reported at 10 California prisons, with 22 workers and four inmates contracting the virus. Inmate testing started March 7.
