All missing persons accounted for in Joplin

Since the May 22 tornado hit Joplin, the Missouri State Highway Patrol has systematically worked through 268 missing-persons reports, bringing the number of lost individuals down to zero yesterday.

Of the 268 people, 144 were reported located and 124 were confirmed dead. As of 1 p.m. yesterday, the death toll was 134, encompassing 124 individuals who were previously unaccounted for, seven individuals who were taken to funeral homes immediately following the tornado and three individuals who have died in a hospital since the storm, according to a news release.

The Missouri Department of Public Safety updated the death toll at 138 in the early afternoon of June 2.

"In the wake of this devastating tornado, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers have demonstrated outstanding professionalism and dedication in carrying out the vital mission of locating every individual who was unaccounted for after the storm,” Gov. Jay Nixon said in the release. “Our troopers worked 24/7 to locate these individuals and to bring relief to the families of the living, and closure to the families of those who died."

As of 1 p.m. June 1, the individuals confirmed dead and whose next of kin had been notified were:
