Phoenix Home Care Inc. was born from a desire to serve.
“I founded Phoenix in 2011 not only to serve clients in the comfort of their home but also to serve individuals in the community who, like me, desired the opportunity to have a career that helps others,” says Phoenix President and CEO Phil Melugin.
He says Phoenix has been guided by a mission that seeks to offer meaningful opportunities for employees, while providing care with “skill and Christ-like values of compassion, honesty and patience.”
For Melugin, that mission is more than words strung together.
“I live and demonstrate our mission day in and day out, leading by example,” he says. “I find it so important to show compassion, honesty and patience, not only in the health care industry but also with every conversation and person you come in contact with. I truly believe that I pass on our mission to each employee, ensuring as a whole we are providing quality care to those in need.”
Melugin brought a background of service to Phoenix. He worked as a vocational counselor assisting people who had been injured at work re-enter the workforce before moving to Oxford Health Care, where he managed the state-contract program. Before starting Phoenix, Melugin was president and co-owner of Integrity Home Care LLC.
Phoenix now operates 18 branch locations in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado and Illinois and serves more than 5,000 clients and patients each week. The company’s 2018 revenue was $81 million, up from $73.5 million the year before. Melugin visits every branch.
“I touch base with each department lead, ensuring they are on track while also giving them the opportunity to express any questions or concerns,” he says. All levels of staff, leadership and field staff are aware that I have an open-door policy.”
Melugin steps in whenever something needs done – like the time staffing was short and paychecks were due. He sat down and stuffed envelopes to make sure 3,500 employees were paid on time.
The company offers leadership employees training through its in-house Phoenix Home Care University on topics ranging from effective communication to managing conflict.
“By making these self-improvement classes available, I am investing in each and every leadership team member and providing them with a learning opportunity they cannot get anywhere else,” he says.
Melugin is committed to connecting with local organizations and encourages his employees to do the same. He has been involved with Boy Scouts of America, Honor Flight of the Ozarks and The Good Samaritan Boys Ranch. He is especially proud of founding In Time of Need Foundation LLC.
“As Phoenix Home Care and Hospice continues to grow, I had the desire to give back in a new way,” Melugin says. “In Time of Need Foundation was created to raise funds to give back to individuals who are in a financial hardship due to medical expenses.”
Adrianna Norris became a first-time business owner with the opening of Finley River Chiropractic; PaPPo’s Pizzeria & Pub launched its newest location; and Huey Magoo’s opened its second store in the Ozarks.
