Willard hires city administrator

The city of Willard has hired a new city administrator.

Wesley Young is joining the city with a more than 20-year career in public service, including administrative work for the state of Arkansas, according to a news release.

“I am excited that after just a few months of actively seeking candidates for the position of permanent city administrator, we have successfully located and hired a candidate that meets all of our requirements and then some," Mayor Sam Baird said in the release. "Mr. Young is just the right person to help Willard maintain the stability we've reestablished over the last few months."

Young will start May 20 with an annual salary of $125,000, said Donna Stewart, interim city administrator.

As city administrator, Young will oversee the day-to-day operations of the city of Willard, working with elected officials, department heads and community stakeholders, according to the release.

“As I prepare to assume my responsibilities as city administrator, I am inspired by the potential for positive change and meaningful impact that lies ahead," he said in the release. "My commitment to excellence and my decades-long passion for public service will guide me in fulfilling my duties and responsibilities to the best of my abilities."

Stewart said a multistate search process preceded Young's hiring. Around 10-20 applicants that came in over the past 12 months did not meet the requirements sought by the board, Stewart said. A recruiting agency was hired, after which Willard received eight candidates, with four interviewing.

"Wesley was the best and final candidate interviewed by the board," Stewart said via email.

The most recent permanent city administrator, Brad Gray, exited in September 2022, Stewart said.
