The White House proposed the release of immigrant detainees into sanctuary cities at least twice in the last six months.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco was among areas the Trump administration tried to target, according to Department of Homeland Security officials. Sanctuary cities are places where local authorities have declined to release illegal immigrants for deportation.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly rebuffed the administration, saying the plan was inappropriate.
“This was just a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion,” a White House official said in a statement.
