Wal-Mart localizes Facebook pages

Posted online
Wal-Mart 'likes' Facebook. In an effort to localize the brand via social media, Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has launched a Facebook application allowing users to seek out store-specific information on more than 3,500 locations.

Pages have been launched for Springfield Walmart stores at 1923 E. Kearney St., 2825 N. Kansas Expressway, 3315 S. Campbell Ave., 3520 W. Sunshine St. and 2021 E. Independence St.

The My Local Walmart application, available through Wal-Mart's Facebook page, allows the user to view locally-relevant information, such as new merchandise, in-store events and discounts, according to a news release.

For example, the page for the East Kearney Street location this morning showed a discount on Alfredo sauce, a Red Baron pizza sampling event and a new item, sliced peaches.

“Our innovative approach with Facebook allows us to bridge the gap between local and social, giving millions of customers the personalized shopping experience they expect from Wal-Mart," said Stephen Quinn, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of the megaretailer, in the release.

Wal-Mart's Facebook page has roughly 9.5 million "likes."

“People on Facebook want to connect with the brands that they love,” said Carolyn Everson, vice president of global marketing solutions for Facebook, in the release. “Wal-Mart’s new app offers enhanced local interaction at an unprecedented scale to their customers."[[In-content Ad]]
