Tyson Foods donates 38K pounds of chicken

Springdale, Ark.-based food processor Tyson Foods Inc. yesterday donated more than 38,000 pounds of chicken to support the fourth annual Cans for Coffee food drive, a partnership between McDonald's and Ozarks Food Harvest.

“We are thankful for partners like Tyson who donate protein, one of our most needed food items," Ozarks Food Harvest President and CEO Bart Brown said in a news release. "With the help of Tyson, we can help our clients put more protein-rich foods on the table."

The Cans for Coffee campaign, which began Oct. 31 and runs through Nov. 20, offers McDonald's customers a free coffee product in exchange for the donation of nonperishable food items for Ozarks Food Harvest.

More than 60 area McDonald's restaurants have participated in the drive.

Since 2008, Cans for Coffee has brought in more than 50,000 pounds of food, which are distributed via Ozarks Food Harvest to more than 300 hunger relief organizations in 28 Ozarks counties.

“In this weak economy, demand for food assistance continues to spike,” Brown added. “Many families who originally accessed our pantries as a temporary fix to help their household budgets have been forced to visit pantries on a more long-term basis as a source of food for their children right now.”
