- - Hi, I'm Sherry Coker and I'm with the OTC Center for Workforce Development.
In our first training bootcamp episode, we discussed the training needs assessment and its importance in finding the root cause of problems and existing performance gaps in your employees. If the assessment reveals that there are gaps in employee performance due to a lack of knowledge or a lack of skill then your next step is to design and develop an appropriate training solution and that's where the needs analysis comes in.
Now, a training needs analysis gathers all of the essential details that you need in developing an appropriate training solution. If the needs assessment answers the question, "Will training help?", the needs analysis answers the question, "What training will help?".
You can use a lot of the information that you gather during the needs assessment phase of this project but don't be afraid to go back and talk to those same managers, employees, frontline supervisors, to get more details because it's those details that are going to lead you in the direction that you need to go in developing those training objectives that are going to close that performance gap and get those employees to the level of skill that you need them to be in order to do their jobs more productively and more efficiently.
As we mentioned in episode one, no one knows your company better than you do and you could certainly work to put together a training solution that fits the needs for your employees. You want to be very careful however not to introduce any kind of a bias into your assessment and analysis results. Doing so can cost you time, money, employees and also customers.
