STL sued over 'guaranteed basic income' initiative

The city of St. Louis has been sued over its “guaranteed basic income" initiative.

The legal challenge funded by the nonprofit Holy Joe Society alleges the program that pays some lower-income families $500 a month for a year and a half violates the state Constitution and the city charter.

The suit cites, in part, a state constitutional provision that reportedly bars local governments from granting public money or property to “any private individual.”
