Springfield businessman and philanthropist Fred McQueary died June 20 at age 83, according to a news release from family.
McQueary worked for McQueary Bros. Drug Co. for 51 years until his 2005 retirement, including as president and chairman. San Francisco-based McKesson Corp. purchased the company - founded in 1924 by his father, Les, and uncle, Frederick McQueary - in 2008 for $190 million, according to
Springfield Business Journal archives.
McQueary received the Missourian award in 2009, and was known for contributions to Missouri State University, according to the release.
Fred and Ramona McQueary helped fund Meyer Library, Strong Hall, Glass Hall, the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts and the McQueary Family Health Sciences Hall.
"Fred will be remembered for the positive impact he had, not only on many, many individuals, but also the community of Springfield," MSU President and family friend Clif Smart said in the release. "Certainly, there was no stronger supporter of Missouri State University. He was a fine man and I will miss him."
Fred McQueary is survived by his wife, as well as sons, Dr. Fred McQueary, Mark and David McQueary, eight grandchildren and one great grandson.
A visitation has been scheduled 5:30-7:30 p.m. June 25 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 E. Seminole St. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. June 26 at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 E. Cherry St., the release said.[[In-content Ad]]
