2024 SBJ Economic Growth Series: Building a Region

Posted online

In our quest to build a dynamic and prosperous regional economy in southwest Missouri, the importance of clear communication and understanding cannot be overstated. Springfield Business Journal’s 2024 Economic Growth Survey not only identified vital areas for growth, such as infrastructure investment and affordable housing, but it also revealed an intriguing insight: a notable segment of respondents expressed uncertainty about several key issues affecting our business environment.

Take public transportation, for example – 37% of respondents reported that they “don’t know” if conditions have improved, worsened or stayed the same. This sentiment is echoed in other areas, with 27% unsure about air service developments and 24.5% uncertain about municipal by-laws. This reflects a broader challenge of information asymmetry in our community – a gap that SBJ is uniquely positioned to help bridge.

At SBJ, our role is to collect these narratives into stories that inform and empower. By highlighting these topics in our coverage, we can equip businesses with the insights necessary to engage in well-informed conversations. These discussions can become the bedrock for strategic decision-making.

Through in-depth reporting and analysis, SBJ spotlights successful regional initiatives and case studies that demonstrate how informed collaboration leads to tangible benefits. By showcasing these successes, we create a roadmap for others to follow, illustrating the power of informed decision-making and the criticality of staying updated on regional developments.

In addition to SBJ coverage, regional executives can deepen their understanding of local issues by actively participating in workshops and seminars hosted by local organizations. Networking events hosted by trade associations present further opportunities for engagement. Participating actively in local chambers of commerce can also influence business policies and advocate for addressing regional challenges effectively.

Finally, initiating public-private partnerships with governmental bodies and nonprofit organizations can significantly expand professional networks. These collaborations on key regional issues provide executives with firsthand insights into community-driven solutions, fostering a cooperative approach to solving local challenges.

Let us continue to tell the stories that matter, filling the gaps in knowledge with clarity and purpose, and paving the way for a thriving, interconnected regional economy.
