Editor’s Note: This is a special year for Springfield Business Journal as 2019 marks the 20th year of the Most Influential Women awards. With this class, now 400 business and community leaders hold the prestigious title.
These honorees are at the top of their professional games and use their platforms to promote causes they care about. They’re leading through action, and the next generation is watching and learning.
At right, you’ll read 2018 honoree Carol Embree reflect on what it means to be an influential woman and the lessons learned throughout her career.
Let’s give a round of applause to this year’s honorees and a toast with this well-known phrase: “Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”

The Judging Process
Here’s the Most Influential Women selection process from start to finish:
1. Nominations are submitted from across the community.
2. Nominees are notified and given questionnaires to fill out for judging.
3. SBJ selects an independent panel of judges to evaluate each submitted questionnaire, along with a resume and letter of recommendation.
4. Judges individually score each respondent based on their professional accomplishments, leadership and civic engagement.
5. Judges are asked to recuse themselves from scoring any nominee considered a conflict of interest.
6. SBJ tallies all judges’ scores to determine the top 20, with no two honorees from the same organization.
7. SBJ announces the honorees and reveals the year’s judges.
