Springfield Cares, a monthly publication created to promote charity work and fundraising in Springfield, launched its first issue in June. The glossy magazine is in partnership with the American Cancer Society, Children’s Miracle Network, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Court Appointed Special Advocates. “There had to be a way for me to do something in business that could actually make a benefit for other people,” said Springfield Cares publisher Amy Michael, who also owns dvLaRue graphic arts. The for-profit organization shares a percentage of its advertising revenue with the four charities, Michael said. Advertisers choose to benefit the nonprofit of their choice, which includes the charity’s logo placed in the ad. The free magazine is available at the four charities’ offices, around town in designated waiting areas and the Springfield Cares office, 305 E. Walnut St., Ste. 217. 417Shopping.com
James Reynolds launched 417Shopping.com in mid-May. The Web site posts locally owned businesses’ coupons and special deals at no cost to participating businesses. “I try to target small businesses, the ones you don’t see on every advertisement,” said Reynolds, adding that he has several family members and friends who own businesses and they helped him form the idea. After roughly a month of service, the Web site has 17 clients, including Dickerson Park Zoo, Atlas Security, and Flame and Flair Gift Boutique. Both shoppers and business owners create accounts to use the service. The site also includes the posting company’s bio.

Charming Charlie
Charming Charlie, an upscale women’s accessory boutique, opened June 14 in Battlefield Mall. Patty Fadhouli, Charming Charlie’s corporate director of marketing, said the store targets women ages 20 to 50. With price points from $5 to $50, the boutique offers jewelry, handbags and scarves organized in the store by color, Fadhouli said. “We really focus on value (and) our store layout,” Fadhouli said. The 7,000-square-foot Springfield store – in space formerly occupied by Earthbound Trading Co. next to Ruby Tuesday – is among a dozen the Houston-based chain plans to open this summer, according to www.charmingcharlie.com.
