New Kum & Go planned in Springfield

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go LC is planning another store in Springfield as it wraps up some $140 million in planned investments over eight years in the area.

Spokesperson Ariel Rubin said the company is awaiting final approvals from the city to begin construction on a new convenience store at 1822 W. Grand St. It’s planned just to the northwest of a vacant Price Cutter at the Grand and Kansas Expressway intersection.

"The store will be a Marketplace prototype that has been opening around the city over the last few years," Rubin said via email, referring to locations with an open kitchen layout, indoor seating and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Rubin said construction is slated to begin this summer with a goal of opening the store late this year or in early 2021. A general contractor has not yet been selected for the 5,600-square-foot project designed by Kansas City-based BRR Architecture Inc., he said. Rubin could not be reached for follow-up by deadline on the cost of the project.

In southeast Springfield, a $6 million Kum & Go store is currently in the works with a planned October completion. Northwest of the Glenstone Avenue and James River Freeway interchange, the store replaces another Kum & Go that was demolished earlier this year.

Rubin previously told Springfield Business Journal the company is on track this year to finish $140 million in planned investments in local stores that started in 2012. The company currently operates 45 stores in the Springfield area.

The planned new store at Grand and Kansas Expressway is on land that was rezoned by Springfield City Council last year. The Greene County recorder's office does not have filings showing a deed of trust between property owner College of the Ozarks and Kum & Go.

Rubin said "we do not comment on purchase agreements.”
