New Greene County internet towers go live

Posted online

An Illinois-based internet service provider has made good on plans for new broadband service in Greene County.

Wisper ISP Inc. completed the installation of internet towers in northeast Springfield, Bois D'Arc and Willard, according to a news release. Last month, Springfield Business Journal reported the $2.7 million investment would be completed by year's end.

The wireless broadband towers in Greene County have the capacity to serve more than 13,300 households.

"At Wisper, we feel internet service is vital to every home, just like water, electricity and other utilities,” Wisper founder and CEO Nathan Stooke said in the release. “Unlike water and power, residents have a choice which company they trust to provide their internet service. This expansion highlights Wisper's ongoing commitment to improve the lives of residents in rural areas and small towns across the Midwest."

The towers in Greene County are part of plans by Wisper to invest $220.3 million in federal funding the company was authorized to receive last year from the Federal Communications Commission. In October, the company launched towers nearby in Walnut Grove and Billings, with each able to serve 2,000 households, according to past reporting.
