An 8-year-old Mexican food truck is planning its entry into Battlefield Mall.
Don Tono Mexican Food is expected to open in the mall’s food court during the first week of July, said Daniel Rodriguez, manager for the venture owned by his parents Norma and Martin. The food truck at 1314 S. Glenstone Ave., near a Walmart Neighborhood Market, will remain open, he said.
“My parents have always wanted to be there,” Rodriguez said, noting a mall official approached them about opening in the food court. “My parents liked that. It’s easier than what they thought it would be.”
Don Tono is opening near the food court entrance in space formerly occupied by a Taco Bell eatery, next to Greek in the Box. The owners signed a one-year lease for undisclosed terms, Rodriguez said.
He said the food truck’s popular menu items, including tacos, burritos and corn-based dishes, would make their way to the mall location, as well.
Rodriguez said his grandfather started Don Tono in Mexico, and the venture is still operational south of the border. His parents were inspired to bring the concept when they moved to the United States.
“Eight years ago, they finally decided to risk it,” he said.
Utah-based gourmet cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opened its first Springfield shop; interior design business Branson Upstaging LLC relocated; and Lauren Ashley Dance Center LLC added a second location.
