Personal Interest Key to Success
My biggest professional influence has been our very own Raylene Appleby, CEO of PJC Insurance. She had confidence in me years ago when I’m not sure I even had it in myself. She took a chance on me when she hired me and I am forever grateful.
I set my mind back then that I was going to grow the personal lines department, and that’s what I did. It never would have been possible without Raylene’s support and advice. I have witnessed her genuine care and concern for others, and that has been a great influence for me. There are three factors that would describe my personal leadership style. First, I treat everyone with respect with no exceptions. Whether it is dealing with clients or handling mistakes by employees, always show respect. Second, I try to create an environment where employees see me as an approachable manager. Leadership is all about empowering employees to do great things.
Lastly, just have fun. I always try to have fun with my team at work. Work is work and we must do it but it doesn’t have to become mundane. It certainly breaks up the monotony of the workweek and brings us closer together as a team.
If I could give advice to aspiring leaders it would be this: pay attention to your people. The highest respect you can give someone is to be interested in them and their success. This was done for me and it made such a difference in my life and attitude. I believe leading is a lifelong process and all we can do is look to others wiser than ourselves and learn from them.
