Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, introduced a bill that would drastically change the business models of large technology companies like Facebook and Google's YouTube.
Hawley is seeking to remove the immunity big tech firms receive under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. Under Section 230, the companies are not liable for content their users post.
Hawley's bill includes a provision that would protect companies if they submit to biannual audits that prove their algorithms and content-removal practices are “politicaly neutral.”
