Discount chain plans Springfield market entry

Philadelphia-based discount store chain Five Below Inc. (Nasdaq: FIVE) is entering the Springfield market.

The company is launching stores at two retail centers: Primrose Marketplace and Springfield Plaza.

At 3500 S. Glenstone Ave. in Primrose Marketplace, a June 14 opening is scheduled, according to a building permit on file with the city and the company’s website.

The permit indicates Five Below will take part of the space left vacant by Johnny Mac's Sporting Goods, which closed this month. A declared valuation of $150,080 is listed on the permit for infill work.

A separate city building permit shows a Five Below store coming to 3860 W. Washita St. in Springfield Plaza, located along West Sunshine Street. Tom Rankin, co-developer of the commercial center, confirmed the plans and said a September opening is expected in 8,500 square feet.

Five Below will be housed in a 60,000-square-foot second phase building at Springfield Plaza, being constructed on the west end of the development past Burlington Coat Factory. A $1 million declared valuation is listed on the city permit for the Phase II construction project.

Officials with Five Below could not be reached for comment by deadline.
