CPO, Eden Village launch new shelter

Posted online

Community Partnership of the Ozarks' Alliance to End Homelessness and The Gathering Tree’s Eden Village partnered to open the city's seventh crisis cold weather shelter.

Residents from tiny-homes community Eden Village, as well as staff from CPO and volunteers from other shelters, are working to provide help to the homeless at the 2801 E. Division St. development, according to a news release. The warming center launched Feb. 12 at Eden Village, which was created to break the cycle of homelessness.

“The additional crisis cold weather shelter site at Eden Village is another great example of our community coming together to collaboratively address needs,” said Michelle Garand, CPO's vice president of affordable housing and homeless prevention, in the release. “Overnight crisis cold weather shelters, and the 100-plus community volunteers who support them, provide a critical service for the most vulnerable members of our community."

The new shelter comes on line as available bed capacity began to diminish at existing shelters operated by Brentwood Christian Church; East Sunshine Church of Christ; First Unitarian Universalist; Grace United Methodist Church; Salvation Army’s Harbor House; and The Gathering Tree’s Revive 66 Campground, according to the release.

The Eden Village site has the capacity to serve 25 people. In the near future, the shelter is slated to be partially overseen by paid staff through city of Springfield funding, according to the release.

Crisis cold weather shelter operators are calling on community volunteers for assistance, according to the release.
