CoxHealth announced it is switching to a new electronic health record provider in what officials say is a "major investment in technology" for the health system.

The Springfield health system is partnering with Verona, Wisconsin-based health care software firm Epic Systems Corp. on the change, according to a news release. Epic operates an electronic health record system of the same name.

The planned investment was not disclosed in the release, and health system officials could not be reached for comment by deadline.

“The move to Epic represents a monumental step forward for CoxHealth,” said Patrick Murfee, CoxHealth chief technology officer, in the release. “This decision signifies our unwavering dedication to delivering the highest standard of care while embracing technology to enhance patient outcomes.”

CoxHealth leaders chose Epic after a selection process that included input from hundreds of providers and staff members. Health system officials say most new medical residents are training on Epic.

Full implementation is set for completion by early 2026, according to the release.

Springfield Business Journal has previously reported that CoxHealth works with Cerner, which was later purchased by Oracle, on electronic health records.
