CoxHealth created a $2.7 million fund as an investment in employees impacted by the coronavirus.
The fund is designed to pay for up to two weeks of paid time off for employees who are unable to work due to COVID-19 confirmation or exposure, according to a news release.
“We made this decision for the benefit of our employees who may be affected by COVID-19, as we want to support them in this time of uncertainty. We feel it’s the right thing to do,” CoxHealth President and CEO Steve Edwards said in the release.
The $2.7 million sum is based on 10% of the health care system's employees utilizing the benefit. It's covered by operating revenue from CoxHealth, as well as funding that had been set aside for an annual employee banquet, which was canceled over COVID-19 concerns.
An extension to existing earned time off and sick leave programs, the benefit is available to full- and part-time employees, according to the release.
CoxHealth ranked No. 1 on Springfield Business Journal's 2019 list of the area's largest employers, with 11,754 local employees.
