City of Springfield loses access to X account

The city of Springfield announced Wednesday that its account on social media network X has been compromised.

City officials do not plan to create a new X account, though efforts continue to recover it, according to a news release.

"We regret this inconvenience for our 18,000-plus X followers and encourage them to unfollow the X account," Springfield spokesperson Cora Scott said in the release.

Scott said via email that the municipality is unsure what group or individual is responsible for the account being compromised.

The city of Springfield's X account, created on the site formerly known as Twitter in 2009, has 18,065 followers. The last official post was on May 4.

The city's coverage of City Council meetings and the Mayor’s State of the City Address will be posted on Facebook moving forward, according to the release. The city also has accounts on Instagram, LinkedIn and Nextdoor, and officials say they've taken steps to secure those accounts.
