Burlington to fill former JCPenney space

Posted online

New Jersey-based Burlington Stores Inc. (NYSE: BURL) is adding a second Springfield store.

Brendon Ruth, vice president of leasing for Primrose Marketplace owner Chase Properties, said the retailer is taking over the former JCPenney Home Store space in the center along South Glenstone Avenue.

“It’s an outstanding add. There’s no doubt about it,” he said. “It’s one of the strongest tenants in the retail community right now.”

Burlington is slated to occupy nearly 46,000 square feet this fall, according to a property document for Primrose Marketplace on Chase Properties’ website.

The 3402 S. Glenstone Ave. space in Primrose Marketplace was vacated last year by JCPenney, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

Burlington entered Springfield in September 2017 with a 40,000-square-foot store at Springfield Plaza, near North West Bypass and West Sunshine Street. Burlington will continue to operate its first Springfield store, said Tom Rankin, co-developer of Rankin Development LLC, which is behind the $78.5 million Springfield Plaza.

Formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, Burlington sells clothing and footwear, as well as baby accessories, furniture, home decor and gifts. The company, which has more than 720 stores, is scheduled to release its fourth quarter earnings report on March 5, according to a news release.

Given the challenges facing many brick-and-mortar retailers, it's really nice to see this space put back into use.
