An audit conducted by Missouri Auditor Nicole Galloway's office found several former board members of the Black Mountain Community Improvement District in Van Buren misused taxpayer funds illegally.
The audit alleges the former members used $296,937 in taxpayer funds on personal expenses, including improvements to a convenience store they owned.
The Black Mountain CID was designed to create a sales tax for public infrastructure improvements for the Van Buren district in southeast Missouri.
