Andy’s to move corporate HQ into three-story building

Andy’s Frozen Custard is planning a fall relocation of its corporate headquarters to a three-story building down the street from its current office.

President Andy Kuntz said the company plans to move by October to 211 E. Water St., an 18,000-square-foot building built in 1913 that served as the original location for Harry Cooper Supply Co.

“We love the history of old buildings,” said Kuntz, who this year is leading the company into its 30th anniversary. “The building structure of it is, I think, one of the best in Springfield. They don’t build them like that anymore. It’s all solid concrete ceilings and floors.”

The move would more than quadruple the size of the current Andy’s headquarters at 338 N. Boonville Ave., where the company has operated for around four years.

Kuntz said Andy’s would lease the building from the McQueary family through Clan MacQuarrie LLC for undisclosed terms. The company will vacate its current headquarters, which it also leases from the McQueary family.

Declining to disclose investment costs, Kuntz said the first floor would serve as an entryway with a 14-foot custard cone as a centerpiece. Offices are slated on the top two floors along with a kitchen and a workout facility for employees. Roughly 10,000 square feet of the building would be designated for storage.

“It’s an extremely heavy renovation job,” he said.

Andy’s, which currently employs 13, plans to bolster its corporate ranks up to 20 with the move.
