When engineering consultants Toth and Associates outgrew its south Springfield building, a longtime medical software office nearby had appeal for its size – but not its dimly lit interior design.
“It was really ... a ‘cube’ farm,” Executive President Adam Toth says of the cubicle-filled 1550 E. Republic Road building where the firm relocated in 2020.
The team quickly focused on creating spaces for people to make connections: An open kitchen and dining area with commercial-grade appliances, plenty of glass walls, five conference rooms, and a dedicated pingpong room emerged during the $2 million interior renovation.
“It’s built so much community,” Toth says. “It’s brought people together.”
Plaza Shopping Center gained an arcade with the March 1 opening of The Flying Lap LLC; the repurposing of space operated by Burrell Behavioral Health resulted in the March 18 opening of the company’s second autism center; and a group of downtown business owners teamed up to reopen J.O.B. Public House.
