2011 Choice Employers, 25 to 100 Employees No. 2: Kirkpatrick, Phillips & Miller CPAs PC

Posted online
Kirkpatrick, Phillips & Miller CPAs PC has 55 full-time and seven part-time employees. The company’s benefits package includes a 401(k) plan and profit sharing, as well as health insurance, with the firm paying a portion of premiums for all staff. Other benefits include tuition reimbursement for work-related study and several hours of formal employee training each year. KPM offers flex time and conducts internal employee satisfaction surveys. There also is an employee mentoring program. Employees have many ways to get involved in the community, including volunteering during the work week.

How does your company foster employee loyalty?
“We reward our employees’ hard work during busy seasons with time off and greater flexibility outside of those times. By supporting and encouraging nonprofit involvement, our employees are given an opportunity to give back to the community. … We celebrate employee milestones and reward firm milestones. Through our employee mentoring program, our annual upward evaluations and a buddy system, we work closely with employees to provide guidance for their careers.”

Tell us about your firm’s team-building activities or events.
“In addition to our monthly firm social, where we celebrate individual achievements as well as firm employment anniversaries, we also have tax season snacks and luncheons, a family picnic, an end-of-tax season celebration and a holiday party.
“New this year, we have an internal firm blog where we share family events, pictures and general employee announcements.”

How does your business support work-life balance for employees?
“When building our firm culture years ago, we made a decision to emphasize flexibility. Our employees have flexibility to take off as needed during the day for family events or to stay home with sick children.

“We have several employees who work flexible schedules to accommodate their child-care needs. Our employees work hard during the year to meet deadlines, and we reward that with additional time off and greater flexibility outside of busy season.”

What makes your company’s benefits offering stand out in the market?
“All of our benefits work together to create a culture that attracts new employees and helps us to retain our employees. We recently completed interviews for new entry-level positions, and we heard from many of the candidates that they liked our culture. Our culture is made up of a combination of personalities and perks.”

How does your company support employees’ desires to give back to the community?
“Our employees are strongly encouraged to participate in nonprofit and civic activities. We pay for that time as a part of their workweek. To that end, our employees are currently involved in more than 40 nonprofit organizations throughout the community. Each employee is also given a charitable contribution level to sponsor nonprofit activities and fundraising efforts. Each month, we also have jeans days that benefit the nonprofits our employees nominate.”

What is the most celebrated benefit/perk among your staff?
“Depending on the employee, it might be the work schedule flexibility, the summer book club, the business bonuses, the opportunity to be involved in nonprofit or civic organizations, having individual offices, or even the free soft drinks or juice we offer.
“All of it equates to an overall culture that helps us keep and attract employees.”
