The details of Whataburger's plans in the Ozarks continue to roll out.
Whataburger is targeting a fourth-quarter opening for a restaurant at Glenstone Avenue and Kearney Street, Springfield Business Journal reported on Friday. Since then, an article from OzarksFirst.com indicated three locations are in the works in the Queen City.
Cora Scott, director of public information and civic engagement with the city of Springfield, confirmed the municipality’s Building Development Services Department is working with Whataburger for additional locations at 3880 W. Sunshine St. and 2825 S. Glenstone Ave.
"They have not officially applied for permits yet," Scott said via email of the two restaurants.
She said the city does not have additional details on the plans.
The Sunshine Street address is at Springfield Plaza, while the Glenstone Avenue address points to a location outside of Battlefield Mall. Documentation on file with the city shows plans for a Whataburger restaurant on an existing parking lot along Glenstone Avenue.
Springfield Plaza co-developer Tom Rankin confirmed that a commercial lot is under contract just west of Taco Bell in front of the shopping center. He declined to disclose the planned tenant.
On the north side, the Springfield Inn at 2355 N. Glenstone Ave. is slated to be demolished soon to make way for a free-standing Whataburger, SBJ previously reported.
Whataburger also has plans in the works in Ozark and Republic, according to past reporting.
Ozark Mayor Bradley Jackson, who previously teased on Facebook plans for a Whataburger location in the city, over the weekend emailed SBJ more details of the project.
Jackson said the nearly 3,800-square-foot corporate store, slated to cost $1.9 million, is expected to open this fall at 1851 W. Marler Lane.
