Helped by Springfield, Missouri ranked ninth on finance website WalletHub.com’s 2017 list of the best states to start a business.
The list released this week followed WalletHub’s May study that put the Queen City at No. 11 among the best 150 large cities to start a business.
The state study considered three categories — business environment, access to resources and business costs — and several subcategories. Business environment was weighted higher than the other two categories.
Missouri’s overall score was 51.74. The state placed 10th in business environment, 16th in business costs and 33rd in access to resources.
Other Show-Me State ranks included:
• ninth in average growth in number of small businesses;
• 10th in cost of living;
• 13th in availability of human capital;
• 15th in labor costs;
• 18th in office space affordability; and
• 24th in average length of work week.
The top state on WalletHub’s list was North Dakota, with a total score of 69.38. Placing last was New Jersey with a score of 34.54.
