MSU to convert downtown property into art gallery

Missouri State University is planning to convert downtown condominium space into an art gallery.

The MSU Board of Governors is scheduled to vote Feb. 19 to approve the transfer of property near Brick City to the university from the MSU Foundation, according to the board's agenda.

The deal is valued at nearly $413,000. The purchase is being funded through the student art exhibition fee endowment fund, which has a market value of $1.2 million after being approved by the board in June 1987, according to the agenda.

MSU is slated to use the roughly 7,100 square feet for a gallery operated by the school's Judith Enyeart Reynolds College of Arts and Letters.

The space is located in the Quinn Lofts building off Park Central Square. The four-story building also houses separately owned loft apartments, and it previously was home to Physique Fitness LLC.

The College of Arts and Letters currently operates an art gallery at 838 E. Walnut St. That property will be listed for sale when the gallery relocates, according to the board agenda.

"The purchase of this property provides the opportunity to consolidate property and locates the art gallery in the IDEA Commons area, close to Brick City, which houses the art and design department," the agenda reads.
